they are in close contact with federal, state and local officials. they will make sure we get the resources to the families as swiftly as possible. i thank everyone here who is doing such a great job when it comes to the disaster response. the final message, during the darkness of the storm i think we also saw what is brightest in america. all of us obviously have been shocked by the force of mother nature as we watch it on television. at the same time, we have seen nurses at nyu hospital carrying fragile newborns to safety. we have seen incredibly brave firefighters in queens, waist deep in water, rescuing people in boats. a favorite story is north carolina the coast guard going out to save a sinking ship and they sent a rescue swimmer out and the rescue swimmer said i'm dan, i understand you guys need a ride. that kind of spirit of resilience and strength but, most importantly, looking out for one another, that is why we always bounce back from those kind of disasters. this is a tough time for a lot of people, millions of folks across the east east

one of the tricky spots was last night as it crossed over the 405 expressway about midnight local time here, and it was actually towed by a pickup truck across the 405 because they were concerned about weight. and they had to lessen the weight. so they had to move it to a different transport system. but it has been a phenomenal couple of days here, and it's funny, we talk about the space program and people always talk about well, they're blase about it and it doesn't have the juice, so to speak, that it once did. but when we saw the crowds yesterday and the people, and people standing on their roofs with american flags out and looking out their windows and watching this whole process, you know you still know that there is a tremendous amount of pride in the accomplishments that have made by the u.s. space program and by the space shuttles, which clearly will always be remembered as perhaps the most remarkable flying machines that we will ever see. you can see the crowd gathered there behind me. >> i see that. but also along the way as we have been looking at those live pictures through
